Australian Cricket's Summertime Blues
December 11th 2010 05:46
Australia's poor performances continued again in the Adelaide Test with the English finally walking away with the win they should have had in the First Test. The knives are now sharpening, the masses are now gathering and they have someone's head on their mind. It seems it's a free for all, this player should go, that player should go, he's no good, he'll never be good, he was never any good.
Strap yourselves in folks, a long summer lies ahead, so grab yourself a meat pie, a nice cold beer, sit yourself down in your favourite chair and kiss your Ashes goodbye. With the news of the FIFA World Cup going to Qatar, it seemed that a deflated Australia went out to face an England also suffering a heavy defeat in the World Cup Bidding stakes, and who struck first?
Yes folks, the Poms. Shane Watson seemed to think in the First Innings that silence was golden and a game of silent, heads down and run, was a good idea. Only problem was no one seemed to remind Katich this and he was duly run out. Ponting, obviously suffering from a long night after being curled up in front of the telly hoping to hear good news from Zurich walked out and decided the heat was enough. Duck.
Could you blame him? He's Tasmanian after all and, well, he he didn't use his heads (Hey! A Tasmanian joke!) and that was it from him. Not to worry. He did better in the second innings. Marginally.
The English now believe they are a chance of winning 4-nil, and why wouldn't they believe that? They haven't gone close to being dismissed since the first innings of the First Test, and even when they tried to get themselves out, the Aussies managed to blunder it.
A shock return for Shane Warne? I don't think so but you never know. Maybe Xavier Doherty should be picked for the One Dayers and they play Hauritz in the Test Matches. Warne himself is calling for West Australian tweaker Michael Beer.
Time must be almost run out for Marcus North in the Australian test team as well.
But who to replace him? Calum Ferguson could get the nod. Posters at The Animal Enclosure have been calling for his axing. The Drop North thread has caused a bit of debate. There have even been calls there for Michael Clarke's dropping. There is also the issue of Australia's selectors refusal to select Victorians.
Is there a State bias? I doubt it. It's just a coincidence that some players from Victoria aren't picked but there are many conspiracy theories floating around, not only on the for mentioned site, but Bigfooty as well. If Khawaja replaces North, will that ignite more discussion on the bias of the selectors?
It probably will but let's be realistic. We're looking at a bleak summer. You can see with the discussion of the 3rd Test team there are some signs that people want a change now.
Can the Con....Australians bounce back against the arch enemy? Some think not, some think we can. But if not, there's still the option of someone kidnapping the Ashes and making sure they stay in Australia. Let's just put that on the desperation list though.
But the summer's not all bad though. Domestic Cricket is trying a revamped competition, Fox8 is producing a cricket reality show much like their Football Superstar program where young hopefuls can sign up and win themselves a chance to be a cricket star.
In all seriousness, I hope that Australia bounces back. Being a fan of Australian cricket, it would be good to see the series tied going into the Boxing Day Test, and then a massive duel on Boxing Day to get one up again. Wouldn't that be a good way to recover from Christmas? A great contest sending us into the new year with a leg up. A 2-nil series lead would probably leave a lot of people deflated.
So it's up to Australia to bounce back and win the 3rd test. They can do it, if they snap out of this form slump and make a few changes to the side. Mitchell Johnson was training the house down trying to figure out what's wrong with him and is some hope of a recall. Phil Hughes may also be on the verge of a comeback. There are other cricketers hoping to get the call to save the Ashes. Its time to fight Australia.
