The Joey Barton Saga
June 1st 2011 16:34
Newcastle United have announced that they are not offering Joey Barton a new contract, Barton has been very vocal about this. He has taken to twitter and has been expressing his feelings for the world to see, no one seems to know why he was not offered a new contract. He was recently voted the Fans Player of The Year, he was one of the Magpies' best players this season.
Kevin Nolan has penned a new deal, Nolan was one that was encouraging Barton to remain at the club but then the carpet was ripped from under him. Joey says he loves the club, and will give his best in his last few months of his current deal.
It runs out in January, clubs seemingly have come in looking to find a way to bring the now rejected Magpie to their club. Everton were rumoured to be looking to offer 4 million pounds, they seemed to have looked elsewhere and now Liverpool are coming to the party. The rumoured offer is 4.2 million pounds, but what will happen? Alan Pardew seems to want Barton to remain, the players seemingly do as well, the fans, but not the boardroom.
But has Barton's verbal war on twitter with the club, made the matters worse? Can this situation be salvaged or is Barton doomed to find a new club? Barton himself made claims he will reject offers, and be "forced out of the club like Andy Carroll."
Newcastle are already sweating on the future of Jose Enrique who has sparked the interest of many clubs, some in the Premier League and some overseas. Pardew has said he was offered a decent contract, or was going to be but with what is going on with the owners, could this see him make the decision to vanish from the club?
Newcastle reportedly rejected a 10million pound advance from Liverpool, and it seems they have decided to turn their attention elsewhere, while he seemingly makes up his mind.
As a Newcastle fan, I am stunned, and shocked that Barton who was expected to be offered a contract wasn't. A guy that everyone at the club wanted to stay, seemingly being told he's not wanted not by the manager, not by the players but the owner and the boardroom.
The fans are left again to scratch their heads and worry about what's the next bombshell to be dropped on a side that Mike Ashley wants to play Europe. Danny Simpson himself has come out and mentioned that the fans should aim for nothing less than playing in Europe.
But how are they going to do that? The team had lost Andy Carroll on the last day of the January Window, with no back up plan, no replacement, they had to limp from there over the line.
Chris Hughton had the side in 7th place, sacked, was made play Fantasy Football with the owner. What exactly is going on? Barton has also said that the owner wants younger players, but he wants them as cheap players. They want to get to Europe but won't spend to get themselves there.
35 million pounds fell into Newcastles lap once a forced sale of Carroll was made, Pardew clearly wasn't interested in selling. Fans are calling for Mike Ashley to go, to sell up and leave the club, and sooner rather than later.
But it doesn't look like Barton is going to go without a fight, he's aimed his fight at the ones that want him (it seems.) gone. When January comes will he still be at the club? Will he even make it to the start of the season?
One thing that seems clear, if he does stay, he will make sure to give the club his best, and try and bring some success to the club. Whether or not he's allowed to remain there long enough to see it, is another thing.
